The dates for the crucial assembly elections to be held in five states have been finalised and will be announced by the Election Commission by 4.30 pm on Friday, according to the Press Information Bureau.

The elections, most likely to start at the end of next month, are due in Delhi, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Mizoram.

While Delhi, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Mizoram are expected to hold elections in only one phase, Chhattisgarh may have two-phase polls in view of the Maoist problem.

As part of preparations, the Election Commission has asked for 60,000 paramilitary personnel  to be deployed ahead of the elections in these states.
