A 53-year-old south Delhi-based builder conducted a sting operation and lodged a case of extortion against three journalists for allegedly attempting to extort him at the behest of a man who used to help him procure women, sources said on Thursday.

The case was registered after the said builder, a resident of Vasant Vihar’s A block, approached a city court alleging that one Manu Sharma, who stays at Satya Niketan and had provided him women on some occasions, had filmed him in the act and was using the same to blackmail him.

“The complainant came in contact with Sharma since his office is also located in the Satya Niketan area. According to his complaint, Sharma had provided him women for sexual gratification on four to five occasions,” said an officer.

However, recently Sharma began threatening the victim over the phone claiming that he had video clips of him which could be used to implicate him in a false case of rape, sources said.

According to sources, Sharma used his association with three journalists who later tried to pressurise the victim to cough-up R20 lakh on his behalf.

“The court directed the local police to record the victim’s statement on Thursday and seize the CDs of a conversation submitted as a sting operation by him. A criminal case is being registered at the South Campus Police Station in this regard,” the officer added.

Chhaya Sharma, deputy commissioner of police (south) could not be contacted for comment despite repeated attempts.
