In a bid to sensitise people and create awareness about the safety for women, the Faridabad Police will kickstart a campaign called ‘I Respect Women’ from Tuesday.

As part of the campaign, the police will conduct audits of public spaces to check if they are safe for women. Dedicated teams will be formed to conduct the audits.

Students and young professionals will be approached to help.

“If the survey reveals the absence of streetlights makes women feel unsafe, we will approach the government agency concerned to fix the lights,” Jitesh Malhotra, incharge community-policing said.

“We want to make Faridabad a very safe city for women. That is the reason for launching this particular campaign,” A S Chawla, commissioner of police, Faridabad said.

Faridabad Police have also roped in a few private players for sponsoring products such as T-shirts, coffee mugs, jute bags, caps and other items carrying slogans like ‘I respect women’ and ‘respect women’. The items will be distributed to men and women.

“Our aim is to create a feeling of respect towards women in the city and we believe our campaign will work wonders,” Chawla said.

With the rise in crimes against women after the gang rape of a 23-year-old student in December 2012, police in Faridabad feel the campaign will create awareness among the youth.

Mamta Sharma, chairperson of the National Commission for Women and Sushila Sharma, chairperson of the Haryana State Commission for Women will formally launch the campaign.
