In a bid to install a sense of security in the national capital, the government on Wednesday said school buses will be allowed to ply in Delhi only after police verification. Also, all discotheques have been ordered to stop music at 12.30am and to shut by 1am.
The Union Home Ministry (MHA) said the special task force headed by the home secretary has specified that no school will be allowed to hire any transport vehicle without the owner and the rest of the crew being verified by the Delhi Police.
All formalities have to be completed by February 1. All permits issued by the transport department will be re-verified to detect any false information submitted in the old permits.
The task force was constituted following the public outrage after the December gang rape of a 23-year-old student. It comprises officials from the MHA, Delhi government, municipal bodies and Delhi Police.
The task force decided that all standalone discotheques and one in all five-star hotels must stop music by 12.30 am and shut by 1am. On December 21, the government had ordered the closure of all bar and pubs by 1am in Delhi as part of security measures.
The MHA said every DTC and cluster bus must have a CCTV/webcam and every member of the crew of a public transport vehicle must have a photo identify card latest by March 1, which will be verified by the police.
Without verification, these vehicles will not be allowed to ply. The position of buses and bus stops was also reviewed with the chief secretary and transport commissioner of Delhi.
It was agreed that DTC/cluster buses should be GPS-enabled and it should be made functional at a centralised control room by February 1.
A decision was taken to identify all vulnerable bus routes and man them with plainclothes policemen. Besides, every police station will have a women's help desk with women staff. At night, there will be at least two women staff at a police station.
