Sunita (name changed), mother of a five-year-old girl, who is missing from Mubarakpur Dabas in outer Delhi since December last year, has been calling the police to know the status of her case when she got to know about the brutality another five-year-old girl had faced after she had gone missing.

Fearing that her daughter may have met the same fate, the 32-year-old woman is running from pillar to post in search of her daughter.

On Saturday she called Bachpan Bachao Andolan, an NGO working for child rights and started crying while requesting them to look for her daughter. The fear has grown in other parents too, who have been waiting for their children to come back. Ever since the case of the five-year-old girl has come to light, NGOs and police are flooded with calls of parents, whose children have gone missing in the recent past.

“Whenever there is any such case, the parents start fearing the worst. Since the police hardly listen to them, they call us to know the status of their case. There are parents who are waiting for their children to return for three years,” Rakesh Senger from Bachpan Bachao Andolan said. Parents of untraced children are also planning to join the protest outside the Delhi Police headquarters. In the past few years, Delhi Police’s record of tracing children has gone down severely.
