A moment of freeze can  affect the life of an acid attack victim. That’s the funda behind the freeze mob being organised by a group of youngsters today evening. They will freeze for 15 minutes at the busy parking of Palika Bazaar in Connaught Place, to catch attention of the passersby towards acid attack on women.

The freeze mob is being organised by a group called Students Against Acid Attack, which was started two months ago, on Facebook, and currently has around 6,500 members. “The idea is to draw people’s attention towards the heinous crime of acid attack. When acid is thrown on a girl, her life freezes in that moment and what better than a freeze mob to explain it,” says Sakshi Kumar, 23 one of the organisers and a former student of Delhi University. Sakshi also started the hashtag of Justice For Women after the Guwahati molestation case.

Anyone can be a part of the mob and all they need to do is to get a pair of sunglasses and a yellow ribbon/band tied on the left arm. Why sunglasses? “As acid attack normally blinds the victims. Also, yellow is the colour of fire which burns the hearts and minds of the girls after an acid attack. Yellow is also scholastic symbol of a new future which we the students against acid attack, want for the victims,” she adds.

The group of organisers has five girls and a teacher as a mentor. “An episode of a crime show on TV moved me and provoked me to do whatever I can for an acid attack victim. The need of the hour is change and that’s what we are aiming at,” says Pallavi Dhameja, a third year student of Kamala Nehru College and the organiser.

The event page also gives ideas for slogans that can be written on placards by interested people. Some of them include ‘Acid attack is as bad as rape’, ‘Just because I said NO you destroy my face’, ‘Why hasn’t the parliament passed the acid attack law?’, ‘Spare a thought for the acid attack victims’ and ‘Who compensates for my surgery’.
