The police told the Delhi high court, which had ordered a probe into the scam by the economic offences wing of the crime branch in 2011, about the fresh chargesheets.

A PIL filed by NGO Jagrook Welfare Society had alleged that 22,000 ‘gardeners’ and ‘sweepers’ existed as MCD employees only on paper and were being paid salary.

The counsel for the Delhi police told a bench of chief justice D Murugesan and justice R S Endlaw that seven FIRs had been lodged ‘which covered almost all the erring officials and others against whom action has been  taken’.

The police said the entire investigation will be completed in six months and chargesheets filed. It said the signatures of a large number of people, who drew salary through illegal means, have been sent to forensic labs for verification.

The MCD has told the court that disciplinary proceedings have begun against the officials.
