A gang of four men, allegedly involved in at least 14 cases of snatching and laptop thefts, were arrested from south Delhi's Hauz Khas, police said on Sunday.

A motorcycle, abandoned by two members of the gang after a botched snatching attempt near the IIT flyover on November 7, helped the local police track them down, said Chhaya Sharma, deputy commissioner of police (south).

The alleged gang members are Manoj, 25, Kamal, 32, Krishna, 20, and Anil, 20.

"During investigation, it was found that the number plate affixed on the abandoned motorcycle was fake. On verification, the vehicle was found to have been stolen from Saket," DCP Sharma said.

A special team was constituted to probe the matter. It was able to generate information and finally apprehend Manoj who, along with a juvenile, was riding the abandoned bike on the day of the botched snatching attempt and had sustained injuries due to their accidental fall at the spot.

Subsequently, Krishna, Kamal and Anil were arrested at the instance of Manoj.

Kamal had completed a prison term three months ago and Anil was released from jail as early as October this year, police claimed. They were involved in many criminal cases.

"During further interrogation, the gang of four admitted to have committed over 25 chain and purse snatching incidents across south Delhi and, at their instance, seven snatched gold chains, three stolen laptops and three motorcycles used in the commission of criminal incidents were recovered," DCP Sharma added.

According to police, Manoj has a good command and control over bikes and also performs stunts - which attracted the attention of his co-accused, Anil. Krishna, too, is a good rider.

"Invariably, Manoj would ride the bike as the others sat pillion to snatch valuables from unsuspecting victims. The bikes used to commit the crimes would be provided by Anil, who is an expert auto lifter," DCP Sharma added.
