Centre plans to ‘name and shame’ rapists

In a move to name and shame rapists, the government has decided to prepare a database of rape convicts and put them on police websites along with their photographs, names and addresses.

RPN Singh, minister of state for home said the National Crime Records Bureau had been directed to prepare a directory of the rape convicts and uplConfusion in Cong ahead of T-meeting oad their details on its website.

"We are planning to start the process in Delhi. Photographs, names and addresses of the rapists will be uploaded on Delhi Police website also," Singh said.

There was, however, no word, on the steps taken by the Centre to ensure that rapists are convicted. Only one in four men accused of rape are convicted. The other three, walk free.

The announcement came on a day Prime Minister Manmohan Singh nudged chief ministers at the National Development Council meeting to pay special attention to safety of women.
