Perched on the ridge area, they have faced water woes for years. But now they are looking at clubbing efforts of rainwater harvesting by re-using kitchen wastewater, diverting water from overflowing tanks and sprinklers for watering their parks.

The resident welfare association (RWA) of C-9 block in Vasant Kunj, in collaboration with NGO Force, on Friday launched a multi-pronged holistic ‘water self-sufficiency project’.

The residents have identified three parks in the C-9 block for the project, which is funded by HSBC. One abandoned tube well would be turned into a rainwater harvesting structure.

Additionally, water overflowing from tanks would be channelised into the rainwater harvesting system. One zero-electricity kitchen waste water system would be developed. The NGO Force also plans to enable sprinkler systems so that water demand per park can be brought down by 30-40 %.

“We were one of the first RWAs to build rainwater harvesting structure. With this, we are taking this tradition of being the trend setters in water management,” Indu Gehlot, president of RWA C-9, said about the project, inaugurated by Kishen Sehrawat, municipal councillor of the area.

“In today’s times of water shortage, projects such as this where people, the government and the NGOs come together to plan for self-sufficiency in water is the only way to find a way out of water crisis,” said Jyoti Sharma, president FORCE.

The NGO also plans to showcase this project as a ‘Holistic Water Self Sufficiency Education Centre’ for other RWAs that wish to replicate this in their respective areas.
