West Bengal governor MK Narayanan, who is also chancellor of Presidency University, on Friday visited the institution and apologised to the students for the violence even as five persons were arrested for the acts of vandalism.

"I apologise to all the students of Presidency University, and to all the students in West Bengal for whatever had happened. It should not happen again," the governor said.

"In the next few weeks, I will sit with the police to put a system in place that cannot be broken. This is my promise ... I think we need a new set of laws, new set of instruments. That is what I will advise the state. But ... it will take some time."

Meanwhile, the police arrested students, former students and a member of a rock band - all Trinamool Congress supporters - for Wednesday's violence, though senior party leaders including industry minister Partha Chatterjee denied their involvement in the attack.

And, the footage of a private television channel showed on Friday that there was no provocation in the violence. It was caused when a piece of brick thrown by a person accidentally fell on the head of a person who was part of a rally before the university.
