The Supreme Court on Wednesday asked the Uttar Pradesh government to explain why the 10-year-old Dalit girl from Bulandshahr, who was allegedly raped, was locked up by constables of the local police station when she and her parents went to lodge a complaint.
The girl, who was found lying unconscious in a field on Sunday evening, had to spend 20 hours in police lockup till she was finally released on Monday after the SSP intervened.
"How can the police detain a 10-year-old girl?" said a bench headed by Chief Justice Altamas Kabir, taking suo motu cognisance of media reports. The bench directed the UP government respond by April 15.
Meanwhile, in Bulandshahr, following the SC notice, police on Wednesday suspended the station officer and a sub-inspector of the all-women police station, where the girl had been detained.
An FIR has also been registered against all police personnel posted there.
