Vinay Kumar, a 20-year-old gym instructor who was one of the four arrested for Sunday’s gangrape of a 23-year-old girl, confessed to his crime in court. “Mujhe phasi de do, maine bahut bura kaam kiya hain (Hang me, I have committed a heinous crime),” he said before a judge.

After policemen ushered Kumar, along with co accused Pawan Kumar, a fruit seller and the bus driver Mukesh into the busy courtroom of metropolitan magistrate Sandeep Garg, the judge sought their consent for a test identification parade.

A test identification parade is an exercise in which alleged offenders are brought before the victims or eye-witnesses, who then identify them from behind a one-way mirror.

Vinay cracked up first, saying he had raped the girl but did not beat her up and rejecting the option of standing in for an identification parade.

Pawan, too, admitted his guilt. Clenching his fists, he said, "I do not want to participate in TIP because I have done a horrible crime."

However, he too denied having beaten the girl with iron rods.

Mukesh, who seemed to be more composed than his two companions, glanced fleetingly at his companions before he gave his consent for the parade.

The judge asked the police to move a fresh application for recording the confessional statement of the accused persons. "What they have said in court is not on oath," he said.

The court remanded Vinay and Pawan to four-day police custody and Mukesh was sent to 14-day judicial custody.
