Three days on, 'Internet Hindus' is still among the top trends on Twitter. Triggered off by an article by historian Ramchandra Guha in Outlook, quite obviously, the topic has and continues to create a buzz on the internet.
In his article, an excerpt from his soon to be published book 'Patriots and Partisans', titled 'Who Milks This Cow?', Guha writes on how 'Hindutvawadis' troll the internet in search for slights to the faith. Sharing his experience, Guha writes, ".. at least nine in ten of my articles have dealt with other subjects. However, it is always articles that touch on the philosophy and practice of Hindutva that attract the most attention (anger)."
"They have brought me into contact with a certain kind of Indian who gets up before dawn, has a glass of cow's milk, prays to the sun god, and begins scanning cyberspace for that day's secular heresies."
Describing 'Internet Hindus' as a swarm of bees, who come swarming after you at any mention of Modi, Muslims or Pakistan, CNN-IBN deputy editor Sagarika Ghose, in a 2010 article again in the Outlook, says she coined the term to "describe a specific group of people online who describe themselves as Hindu nationalists, and who operate in well-organised groups to attack—in foul language—those perceived as liberal."
While the topic continues to trend, it has now taken a different turn and is now used wish each other happy Diwali.
