Jaitley moots for Modi as BJP's 2014 poll face

Senior BJP leader Arun Jaitley on Saturday virtually pitched for his party naming Narendra Modi as its prime ministerial candidate ahead of the 2014 polls. He said "the early we move ahead on this, the earlier we will work towards taking the nation out of the crisis."

The leader of opposition in Rajya Sabha said the nation needs a leadership which has proven ability. "Next year's election will be somewhat like a presidential election, though in a parliamentary form of democracy, it is held on party basis. It will be so because people want a better leadership in comparison to this government's leadership."

Jaitley was delivering a lecture on "India 2020 - Challenges Ahead" here.

Without taking Modi's name, Jaitley said he was confident that the BJP would steer the country out of the crisis.

Alluding to criticism against Modi's leadership, Jaitley cited the example of former British prime minister Margaret Thatcher, saying it was said about her that, "like her or dislike her, you can't ignore her".

He termed the present mess in the country as a "structural defect" in the system due to which the nation has paid a "big price" and said that Manmohan Singh lacked "leadership" while ministers have to "bow" before Sonia Gandhi because of her "clout and influence."
