Having already declared his intent to take on Sheila Dikshit in her backyard in the assembly polls, Arvind Kejriwal has now gone ahead and made the backyard itself his own  — for a token monthly rent of Rs. 1.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) chief will soon be shifting base from his single-room accommodation in a slum development cluster in east Delhi’s Sundar Nagari to 41 Hanuman Road, a swanky ground-plus-one prime property near Connaught Place in the heart of New Delhi — the CM’s constituency.

The bungalow — built when CP was being constructed around 1930 — has been made available to him by owner Harjeet Singh, an advisor to MNCs.

“The monthly rent in the area goes up to Rs. 2 lakh to Rs. 3 lakh,” Singh said. “Had I wanted, I could have charged the market rent. But I offered it for R1 per month as my contribution to Kejriwal’s fight.” He also termed AAP “the only hope” to fight the system.

While the Sundar Nagari place was a small room of 10 feet by 12 feet, the Hanuman Road address in stark contrast is a sprawling bungalow with a central hall, kitchen and an office. Kejriwal said he would be shifting there in two to three days but would continue to rent the Sundar Nagari room as well.

“The bungalow would mainly be my office as I am fighting from this constituency,” he said.
