Suu Kyi, who studied political science at the college in the 1960s, has agreed to speak to students on Friday. The visit, a college source claimed, was the fruit of an “emotional connection”.

“We have been in constant touch with Suu Kyi. Whether it was special occasions or festivals, we made it a point to convey our message to her. We had also extended unstinting support to her in all her endeavours, so there has always been an emotional connect with her,” said Kanika Khandelwal, media coordinator of the college.

Suu Kyi’s visit to the college had been anticipated since her victory in this year's elections in the southeast Asian country.

The college has stepped up security in the run-up to the pro-democracy leader’s visit. “Security has been tightened. People without invites will not be permitted to enter the campus,” Khandelwal added.

Delhi police too will deploy police personnel to ensure that Suu Kyi’s visit to the college goes off without any glitches.

“We will be abiding by all protocols that are usually followed when a foreign dignitary visits the country. We will be deploying additional forces for security measures," said a senior police official.

On Thursday, Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar will host a lunch for Suu Kyi in Parliament building. Suu Kyi, who will also hold a meeting with Kumar, will plant a Magnolia sapling at Parliament and sign the Golden Book-the signature book for top dignitaries visiting the building.
