A number of senior Congress MLAs on Saturday expressed anguish over alleged casteist remarks made by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)  MLA Kulwant Rana against his party colleague for which the legislator was arrested early this week.

At a Congress legislature party meeting, several Congress MLAs criticised Rana’s remarks against the BJP worker belonging to a Scheduled Caste community. The meeting was held at Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit’s residence.

“The words used by him are not only derogatory but unbecoming of a person who is holding an elected post,” an MLA said.

Rana was arrested on Monday after a court directed police to do so.

He is an MLA from Rithala constituency and has been chargesheeted under the Scheduled Castes and Schedules Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.

He had moved an anticipatory bail after his surrender but it was rejected.
