A bunch of final year students from University of Delhi’s (DU) Dyal Singh College (morning) are on the brink of losing another year if the varsity does not act soon.

The results of around 15 final year students pursuing different courses under the annual examination system have been held up since August 2012 due to shortage of attendance.

Despite exams being around the corner again, there is no clarity on the issue from the university or so it seems.

The students said the college’s inefficiency and DU’s unclear attendance policies were to be blame for the mess.

The students said the college allotted them hall tickets and allowed them to sit for the May 2012 annual examinations. However, a few days after the exams ended, the college put up a list of students who had been detained due to low attendance.

According to a university ordinance, students must be informed of low attendance at least five days before preparatory leaves begin. Principal IS Bakshi conceded that the list was compiled after the exams began.

“Compilation takes time. We did not want to detain students before the list came out. However, by and large, the monthly attendance of students were displayed regularly,” Bakshi said.

The students, however, were unaware of such monthly lists.

The University interestingly had issued a notification in February 2013 allowing students with shortage of attendance in all colleges, as a one-time measure, to give exams, be promoted and their results declared.

However, the notification did not include final year students.

“How is this fair? We have lost a year due to the university’s apathy. We cannot even apply for jobs,” said a student on condition of anonymity.

DU’s registrar Alka Sharma said, “Exemption was given to save student’s time in pursuing the course. Since they have already waited a year, they could give the exams again to improve their performance. However, we are considering the matter and will decide in a day or two.”
