The incident took place around 6 am when the woman was out for a morning walk in Mahavir Enclave locality near the Palam flyover.

The victim, who sustained a bullet in his back, has been identified as Sandeep Singh. Singh was admitted in the Deen Dayal Upadhyay (DDU) Hospital, where his condition was stated to be stable.

Kalyani Devi, 27, a resident of Mahavir Enclave, was out for a morning walk when three men riding a motorcycle accosted her from behind and tried to snatch her gold chain.

The woman immediately raised an alarm and screamed for help.

“Singh, who had just stepped down from a DTC bus, rushed to help the woman. She screamed for help and tried to overpower the snatchers. Fearing that they might be nabbed by other people, one of the snatchers took out his gun and threatened Singh that he would kill him. But when Singh did not heed his threats, the miscreant pumped a bullet into his back,” said a senior police officer.

Singh collapsed on the road while the miscreants snatched the woman’s gold chain and some other jewellery and rode away.

A passerby saw Singh in a pool of blood and made a call to the police control room (PCR). A PCR van arrived on the spot and rushed Singh to the Deen Dayal Upadhyay (DDU) Hospital, where he underwent a surgery, the officer added.

A case of robbery has been  registered at the Palam police station and several teams have been constituted to nab the miscreants.

Singh, whose statement could not be recorded till late in the evening, works in a private company.
