Four Mewati members of a cattle-lifting gang have been arrested by police’s crime branch. The four are believed to be involved in the theft of more than 7,000 livestock and attacks on police personnel in almost 50 chase attempts.

The Mewati criminals were arrested on Thursday night following a brief chase after they breached police barricades and attacked police personnel with stones when they were signalled to stop in south Delhi’s Vasant Kunj.

Ilyas alias Gaalu, Iqbal, Umardin, and Haroon belong to a gang that is active in Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh. The gang is headed by Haroon and Ilyas. Three of the men are siblings.

The police found two country-made pistols and five live cartridges on them. A mini-truck and stones kept for the purpose of attacking the police party were also found. Two other members of the gang managed to flee.

The arrests followed a tip-off, police sources said.
