Delhi’s 20th Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung (62) took the oath of office and secrecy on Tuesday. Acting chief justice of Delhi High Court BD Ahmed administered him the oath at a ceremony at Raj Niwas, the office of the L-G, near Civil Lines in north Delhi.

A 1973-batch former Indian Administrative Service officer, Jung was serving as the vice chancellor of Jamia Milia Islamia before his appointment as the L-G. While he refused to speak to the media after taking the oath of office, Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit exuded confidence that his long association with Delhi will help him serve the people of Delhi better.

“He has a lot of experience as an administrator. He belongs to Delhi and understands the city well. Delhi will certainly benefit under his leadership,” Dikshit said.

The function started with Dikshit, chief secretary DM Spolia and senior officers from the L-G’s secretariat escorting the designate L-G to the dais. Spolia, then, read the “warrant of President” that appointed Jung as the L-G. He then took the oath of office.

As Lieutenant Governor, Jung will be directly in-charge of Delhi Police and DDA, besides being the administrative head of the Delhi government.
