Get ready to pay more to book local community halls for functions and weddings. The South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) has decided to upgrade its A-grade community halls and double the booking rates from the existing Rs. 15,000 to Rs. 30,000.

While there are 90 community halls of different categories, four halls will be taken up in the pilot project — one in each of its four zones: Najafgarh, West, South and Central.

The four halls will get air-conditioners and equipped with modern utilities such as fire-protection systems, clean toilets and a modern kitchen.

The facilities will be eco-friendly and remodelled. They will also be made disabled-friendly.

According to officials, marriages in South Delhi are increasingly being organised in expensive farm houses and hotels and only the lower-middle class choose to hold a function or a wedding at a municipality-run community hall.

If the halls are revamped and made swanky, the corporation expects more people to book them.

The initial project had envisaged improving all the A-category halls. However, the Congress intervened, saying that doubling the booking rates will make it out of reach for people from low income groups.

“The booking charges are very high. The NDMC-run wedding halls have also been revamped  but they are charging just Rs. 24,000. Therefore, we have given permission for revamping four halls for now,” said Farhad Suri, leader of opposition.
