In a notification issued on Monday, the banking regulator told all banks to accept Aadhaar letter for both address and identity after Unique Identity Authority of India complained that banks were accepting Aadhaar letter only as a proof of identity but not of residence.

"If the address provided by the account holder is the same as that on Aadhaar letter, it may be accepted as proof of both identity and address," the notification issued by the central bank said.
