The three municipal corporations are in no mood to hike the parking charges. The civic bodies, which had earlier snubbed a direction by the Lieutenant-Governor's office to implement revised rates, have stuck to their stand of not hiking parking rates.

Standing committee chairman of the South Delhi Municipal Corporation Rajesh Gehlot said, "We are not implementing these revised parking rates. We have to think of the people who have elected us. We had promised them that we won't increase parking charges."

A special task force - formed on the orders of the Delhi High Court to take stock of the Capital's traffic issues - recommended that parking charges should be hiked to discourage the use of private vehicles.

"The L-G approved this recommendation and directions were issued to all civic agencies to implement the new parking rate structure throughout Delhi. The three municipal corporations are bound to implement the change," a corporation official said.

Under the new guidelines, the parking rate for the first 30 minutes for a four-wheeler is Rs. 10, followed by Rs. 20 for an hour and Rs. 50 for three hours. For two-wheelers, it will be Rs. 5, R10 and Rs. 25 in the respective categories.

North corporation leader of the House Mahender Nagpal said the decision was taken without consulting the elected members of the civic body, who represent the people. "We have written to the L-G. This is unacceptable. Even the municipal commissioner in his budget proposal had proposed hike in parking charges, but we had rejected it," Nagpal said.
