With general elections less than nine months away, PM Manmohan Singh on Saturday gave top priority to the approval of the food security ordinance in the upcoming monsoon session of parliament.

Emerging out of the all-party meeting convened by Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar, Singh said: “Of all the ordinances before parliament, the most important is the food security ordinance. I sincerely hope parliament will convert the ordinance into a bill.”

The Centre plans to pass 44 bills during the 16-day monsoon session starting August 5, but Opposition parties plan to corner the government on the economic crisis and shift in FDI policy.
Leader of the Opposition Sushma Swaraj said in the meeting that discussions must take place on the economic crisis and the Uttarakhand flood situation. Swaraj and other leaders also observed that the government has relaxed its original policies on FDI to give more flexibility to foreign investors.
The Opposition has picked up the tricky issue of the economic situation to corner the Congress as it feels that even the allies would not be able to support the ruling party when it comes to the government’s handling of the economy and fissures within the UPA would come out in the open.
In the meeting, the government again came under attack from a section of the Opposition for the Congress’ decision to create Telanagan. Even Lalu Prasad, a loyal supporter of the UPA maintained that the Telangana decision has led to troubles in Bihar and other parts of the country.
