A month after Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi addressed students at the Shri Ram College of Commerce (SRCC) amid loud protests, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has refused to follow in his footsteps.

The college had invited the Prime Minister to address its students as part of its annual day celebrations and to give a lecture on economy and growth.

“We had invited him as it would surely be a pleasure for the whole college to listen to him, but he has informed us that it will not be possible for him to be part of the annual day celebrations due to the ongoing budget session in Parliament,” said PC Jain, principal, SRCC.

Earlier, a large number of students and teachers had protested when the students’ union of the college had invited Modi to speak to the students. Modi’s invitation to speak at The Wharton School via video conferencing was also withdrawn after protests by teachers.
