Family members of Deepti, the 32-year-old woman shot at by her husband at the Karkarduma Metro station, have claimed that problems between the couple started right after their marriage in February 2005.

“Her husband beat her up on the third day of their marriage just because she had handed over her jewellery to her mother-in-law. He was suspicious of her character and so never allowed her to continue her studies or do a job,” alleged Deepti’s uncle, Ami Chand.

“The main problem started after Deepti’s younger sister Nidhi’s marriage in November last year. Kumar started torturing Deepti for not demanding R25 lakh from her father. He was unhappy because we had given him an Alto car while Nidhi’s husband got a Wagon R,” said Chand.

He claimed Kumar had recently tried to kill Deepti and their younger daughter one-and-a-half-year-old Khanak, who suffers from an acute kidney infection, by setting them on fire. They have another daughter, Jeetika, 6, who is not yet aware of ther parents’ death.

“The innocent girls have been at the receiving end ever since their birth. Kumar and his family members wanted a boy. The birth of two daughters was never welcomed,” Nidhi said.

“I can think about adopting the two kids if my husband and in-laws support me. Even after two days, nobody in our family has mustered the courage to tell Jeetika about the death of her parents,” Nidhi added.
