Congress president Sonia Gandhi has said she felt “deep pain” over the violence in Assam and subsequent threats to the people of the Northeast in other parts of the country, calling for punishment to the guilty.

“Whatever happened in Assam… is very painful and a matter of concern. The guilty should face legal action soon,” Gandhi said delivering a speech at the Rajiv Gandhi National Sadbhavna Award Function in New Delhi on Sunday.

Ethnic clashes between Bodo tribals and Bengali-speaking Muslim settlers last month left more than 70 dead and nearly 400,000 internally displaced.

The UPA chairperson, who visited the violence-hit districts of western Assam on August 13, said the “biggest challenge” to the country since Independence was from “enemies of social harmony and unity”.

“The kind of treatment innocent people from the Northeast had to face, all of us should condemn it strongly,” she said.
