The CBI is all set to take over the probe into the mysterious disappearance of Swami Shankar Dev, the guru of Baba Ramdev and his close aide Balkrishna.

"After the issuance of a notification by the Uttarakhand government, the case reached the CBI. But there were few technical issues. There was no FIR registered by the Uttarakhand police that could have been taken over by the CBI. The matter was referred back to the state government. Now, the state police have registered a fresh FIR on abduction charges in the case, which will be re-registered by us," said a CBI official on the condition of anonymity.

Dev, the founder of Divya Yog Mandir, had gone missing on July 14, 2007, during a morning walk in Haridwar. Ramdev and Balkrishna were disciples of Shankar Dev.

Though rumours had sprouted since then about Dev being eliminated, police couldn't find anything pointing towards this conclusion.

According to sources, the state police had closed the investigation in April this year. In October, the Congress government in the state set all the rumours to rest by issuing a notification that the case was handed over to the CBI.

All along, Ramdev maintained that he had nothing to do with the disappearance of his guru. He had also welcomed the state government's decision to hand over the probe to the CBI.

The yoga guru has been leading a campaign against the central government on the issue of black money.
