A middle-aged man, who jumped bail and later produced a fake death certificate to avoid being prosecuted for allegedly having committed a rape, was arrested from Jaipur, police said on Monday.

The accused has been identified as one Subhash. He was first arrested in 2007 in connection with a rape case in Kapashera. He was remanded in judicial custody. He got bail and never appeared in court again, said AK Ojha, DCP (southwest).

“He stopped appearing in court and surety after surety was deposited in the court for his non-appearance. Subsequently, a death certificate of the accused was produced in the trial court by his relatives along with a declaration that he had gone to Nepal after being granted bail and had died on the trip,” said DCP Ojha.

According to his relatives' declaration, Subhash had been cremated in Nepal.

“The story appeared to be concocted. The court ordered the verification of his death certificate in 2010,” DCP Ojha said.

The police noticed that Subhash's family  had vacated their ancestral house in Jhajjar.

"The mother was traced to Churu while his brother Virender was found with his wife in Hari Nagar. At their instance, Subhash was traced to Jaipur where he was living under the assumed alias of 'Monu'. He was brought to Delhi on Monday," DCP Ojha added.
