Soon, it will be mandatory for newly-weds to get their marriage registered, failing which they will be fined. Changing its earlier plan, however, the government will now allow couples to authorise their parents to get the registration done in case they are unavailable for the same. The
Delhi government, which had sent a draft bill of the proposed Delhi Marriage Registration Bill to the Home Ministry, has finally got an approval.
According to sources, the bill has now been sent to the law department for a final scrutiny.

“In the draft bill, we had made it mandatory for all couples to be physically present while getting the registration done. The ministry, however, wanted the bill to be people-friendly and so decided that if the documents were properly attested and fulfilled all the criteria, couples would not have to be physically present,” said an official.

Those failing to register their marriage within 60 days time will be fined a sum of Rs. 1,000.
