Two days after a 77-year-old woman, the wife of a former town planner, was allegedly abducted, physically assaulted and raped by an unidentified rickshaw puller a mere 200 meters from a police station in outer Delhi’s K N Katju Marg, a 22 year old man was arrested for the crime.

“The accused has been identified as Bhola Adivasi, who hails from Madhya Pradesh’s Panna. We arrested him last night after he did not present himself before the local police despite specific directions to do so as per our investigations into the said incident,” said Meenu Choudhary, deputy commissioner of police (northwest).

According to police, the incident had occurred around 7pm near the Japanese Park in Rohini’s Sector-9 when the victim was en route her residence in Sector-7.

“She was returning after a visit to her sister’s residence in Rohini’s Sector 15. She had boarded the metro, de-boarded at the Rithala Metro Station and hired Bhola’s rickshaw to go home for Rs. 25,” said a senior police officer from the investigation team.

According to police, instead of taking the victim home, Bhola forcibly took her to a secluded place near the Japanese Park.

Police said Bhola’s arrest came following the interrogation of more than 500 rickshaw pullers found to be operating in Prashant Vihar, north Rohini, KN Katju Marg and Samaipur Badli.

“Seven teams drawn from four police stations questioned 500 rickshaw pullers, leading to Bhola’s arrest. Not only was he evasive when asked about his whereabouts on the fateful night, but chose not to be present at the local police station to get photographed, so that it could be shown to the victim,” DCP Choudhary added.

According to police, Bhola, who came to the capital in 2006 and started out as a mason, is unmarried and stays in Rohini’s Sector-15.

“Apart from a shoe flap found at the crime spot, which subsequently matched with Bhola’s shoes, we recovered a handkerchief doused in some chemical substance that he had used to drug the victim,” said the officer.

“The Rs. 35 that he had snatched from her after raping her has also been recovered,” the officer added.
