Family, friends and activists organised a public meeting and held a day of solidarity with Ishrat Jahan in the Capital on Saturday.
The gathering saw Jahan’s family as well as a number of people from the civil society in participation.
Jahan’s family reiterated that she was innocent and had been framed. “She was somebody who used to be scared of cockroaches and lizards. How could she be a terrorist and kill people?” Jahan’s sister asked. She said the fight has been going on for the last nine years, since Ishrat was killed in 2004.
“Every news channel has been asking whether she was a terrorist or not. A girl who was taking care of the entire family, whose father had died long back, how could she be a terrorist?” she added. The public meeting, however, was not held without incident. A number of Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) members tried to disperse the gathering and started shouting slogans against Jahan.
“VHP activists were present at the venue in plainclothes and so were the local police. The former began shouting slogans as soon as the condolence meeting began and were soon overpowered. We arrested six of them for breach of peace. A case was lodged at the Parliament Street police station,” said SBS Tyagi, deputy commissioner of police (New Delhi). The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), on Wednesday, filed a chargesheet claiming that Jahan was not a terrorist, nine years after she was shot dead by the Gujarat Police in an alleged fake encounter.
