Zee is seeking quashing of three FIRs, including an extortion case, registered against the group and its editors.

Acting on an urgent petition mentioned by Zee Television, a bench headed by Chief Justice Altamas Kabir also issued notice to Jindal Steel and Power Ltd (JSPL) of which Naveen Jindal is the chairman.

It gave two weeks time to the respondents to file their replies to Zee's petition. The court, however, refused to stay the criminal proceedings.

The bench, also comprising Justice A R Dave and Justice Vikramajit Sen, issued notice on another petition filed by Zee, questioning the notice issued by the Centre for revealing the identity of the December 16, 2012, gang rape victim's male friend in an interview aired by the channel.

He is also the sole eyewitness in the case.

Appearing for Zee and its editors Sudhir Chaudhary and Sameer Ahulwalia, senior advocates Harish Salve and Maninder Singh alleged that the three FIRs registered on October 2, 2012, January 4, 2013 and January 15 came as a result of an "unholy conspiracy" between Jindal and the Delhi Police.

They wanted the case to be transferred to some other agency.

The Zee editors were arrested after the Jindal Steel Ltd alleged that they tried to extort money from the firm by promising not to run stories of the company's alleged involvement in the coalgate scam.

A meeting between them and the company officials had allegedly been recorded on video.
