Samajwadi Party (SP) welcomed the HC decisions against caste rallies and in the same breath attacked Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) as the promoter of caste rallies.

While all the top SP leaders, the national president Mulayam Singh Yadav, the national general secretary Ramgopal Yadav, or the senior leader Naresh Agarwal welcomed the decisions and said that SP does not engage in caste rallies.

A prominent state leader, Ramasrey Kushwaha said: “SP does not do caste sammelans. Our sammelans are related to communities like Vyapaari sammelan  or Mazdoor sammelans or Adhivakta sammelan to address respective communities, but we do not do caste sammelans. We held prabuddha varga (intellectuals) sammelan, but it was not a Brahmin sammelan.”

Kushwaha further said: “It is BSP that had launched the culture of caste sammelans as their politics is caste based. Our politics is not based. We are Samajwadi—the word itself includes all sections of the society. SP never did any caste sammelans nor it had any such intentions. Anyways, our party respects judiciary.”

The party’s state spokesperson, Rajendra Chowdhary said: “Samajwadi Party believes in casteless society and casteless politics. Dr Lohia, Chaudhary Charan Singh and Mulayam Singh Yadav were never in favour of caste politics. It is BSP that has been doing caste politics and Election Commission should take cognizance of it.”

Chowdhary said these days BSP was busy teaching its senior leaders to attract higher castes, especially Brahmins, towards itself.
