Four homeless people, sleeping on a pavement, were run over by a speeding vehicle at the Lala Lajpat Rai Marg, near Moolchand, on late Friday night.

One woman was killed while three others, including a 12-year-old, were left injured. The police said that while nobody was able to note down the registration number of the car, passers-by identified the vehicle as a sports utility vehicle (SUV).

The incident took place around 11:45 pm on Friday at the footpath between the dual carriageways at Lala Lajpat Rai Marg. "We were fast asleep when the incident took place. Suddenly, a speeding car came from the Moolchand side and rammed into the footpath, climbed onto us and sped away," said 56-year-old Bapu, one of the victims of the accident, in his official complaint to the police.

The other three victims have been identified as Suman, Naru Hasan, 16 and Sipon, 12.

A total of 16 homeless persons and rag-pickers were asleep on the footpath at the time of the incident.

Police said that a passer-by noticed the accident and called the police.

Police officers said they rushed to the spot and found Suman lying in a pool of blood. "We quickly shifted all of them to AIIMS Trauma Center where Suman was declared brought dead. Naru Hasan is critical while the other two have been discharged," said a senior police officer.

"No one was able to note down the registration number of the vehicle, though people have described the car as an SUV. It is possible that the driver wanted to cross over to the other side and decided to cross the footpath instead of taking a U-turn under the flyover," added the officer.

Police said that a case of rash and negligent driving and causing death by negligence has been registered at the Hazrat Nizamuddin police station.
