The Delhi Police plan to conduct self-defence training in a number of Delhi University (DU) colleges.

A session was recently conducted at Miranda House, police said. The training modules will have lessons in basic defence tactics and will be extended to most DU colleges.

“We plan to cover all colleges of DU and not just girl’s colleges. Students have come forward in large numbers and have shown a great deal of interest.

This whole exercise will be repeated very soon since the first session was only a demonstration. Students will be taught basic defence techniques like freeing themselves from the attacker and how to use objects close at hand to protect themselves,” said Sindhu Pillai, DCP (north).

This initiative came several days after students from various other colleges had taken matters into their hands and decided to work for greater safety.

“We have been continuously stressing on safety of the students. We have taken several initiatives of our own, including writing to the Lieutenant Governor, for increased safety around the college and hostel area,” said Manaswini Yogi, professor, Indraprastha College.
