"The results of this year's historic election are a reaffirmation of the faith of American people in your leadership, which you have so ably demonstrated in backdrop of a challenging global economic environment," Gandhi, who is also UPA Chairperson, said in a letter to Obama.

Gandhi noted that Obama steered the US through a difficult period even as leaders across the world were grappling to meaningfully address the fall-out of the crisis.

"You also played a crucial role in bringing together leaders from across the world to shape a collective response to the crisis under the G-20 framework," she said in the letter.

Recalling her meeting with Obama during his visit to India in November 2010, the Congress President said, "I firmly believe that in the times to come, India and US, being two largest democracies of the world, will work together not only in the bilateral context but also for the larger good of humanity".

She said that the people of India have a special admiration for him and recall his "landmark visit" here.

"Your inspiring address to the Indian Parliament, where you invoked the philosophy of Mahatma Gandhi, the father of Indian nation, resonated across the political spectrum in our country," the Congress President said.

Gandhi also hailed Obama for remaining sensitive to the cause of the disadvantaged and the needy on the domestic policy front in the US and for setting in motion policy measures to ensure that poeple on the margins of society feel empowered.

"Please accept my heartiest congratulations and best wishes as you commence your second innings as President," Gandhi said, adding a personal note to the greetings by asking the US President to convey her regards to "your gracious wife Michelle and your lovely daughters".
