"It is a heinous crime… I am saddened and pained," she said, interacting with reporters after inaugurating the National Media Centre in Delhi.

The gang-rape incident also resonated in the Lok Sabha. Members voiced concern that such incidents continue despite stringent laws, a view also shared by the government.

Raising the issue during zero hour, BJP's Gopinath Munde said the Centre should seek a report from the Maharashtra government and a statement should be made in the House as law and order situation in the state was bad.

He also said no money had yet been sanctioned for the proposed Rs. 1,000-crore Nirbhaya fund announced by the Centre a few months ago.

When Trinamool Congress member Sougata Roy raised the issue, some Congress MPs were heard saying that he should be worried about similar cases taking place in his party-ruled West Bengal.
