To reach out to passengers in distress, the Delhi Police are in the process of setting up a police picket inside Terminal 3 of Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA).
Currently, the airport police station is at least a km away from the terminal.
The Delhi Police are in touch with the airport operator, Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL), to get space allotted for the police booth.
"We have asked DIAL to provide us a cabin where we can ask our staff to sit and deal with complainants. It will be a small picket with necessary infrastructure. DIAL has given space to agencies such as customs, Central Industrial Security Force (CISF). On similar lines, we would like to have our office too inside the terminal," a senior Delhi police official said requesting anonymity.
Right now, the police station is located outside Terminal 2. After the airport operations shifted to T3, Terminal 2 is lying unused. In the absence of a complaint centre outside Terminal 3, passengers have to either reach Terminal 2 or place a PCR call to get their grievances addressed.
"What is the point of having an office at a deserted place, where a passenger has to think twice before going? A person in problem looks for easy access and we can provide that by having our office inside the terminal," the official said.
"There is no direct link road to T2 from T3 and only those who are aware of the surroundings can reach the police station easily. Generally, our men escort complainants to the police station," said a senior police officer.
Almost 60,000 passengers use T3 every day. DIAL refused to comment on the matter.
