The training centre, possible sites for which have been selected at Sheikh Sarai and Dwarka Sector 3, will provide in-service training to over 9,700 corporation school teachers.

“Every teacher must go through 21 days of mandatory training under the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan. Our teachers had to go to other institutes to undergo these trainings. So to aid them, this decision to have a corporation’s training centre was taken,” a senior south corporation official told Hindustan Times.

Apart from modules on curriculum, activity-based learning, use of multimedia educational tools, life skills will also be a part of the training.

“Resource persons from National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT), State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT), Central Institute of Education, Delhi University and department of education, Jamia Millia Islamia will train the teachers in the institute,” the official said, adding that a budgetary provision of Rs. 2 crore has been earmarked for the project, which can increase based on requirement.

The south civic body has 588 schools in which over 3,41,000 students are enrolled.

The corporation has been taking regular initiatives to increase the standard of education in these civic body-run schools including teachers’ training, better monitoring process to make teachers more accountable.

In a bid to bring more children back to the schools, it is also partnering with NGOs to organise an enrolment drive, which is set to kick off sometime this month.
