Arpita Jain who is seeking nursery admission for her son this year lives in Dilshad Garden, but has not applied to a single school in her vicinity. Instead Summerfields School in Kailash Colony is one of her top choices. Her child has to travel over 50km each side, but she said that a “good” school for her son is her priority.

“I know if I put him in the south or central Delhi schools he has to travel a lot but we are helpless. There is no good neighbourhood school in our locality. The reputation of the school matters a lot. Once admitted he would be studying there till Class 12, so I have to make sure he gets through to the best one,” said Jain.

Many parents staying in north, east and west Delhi are flocking to south and central Delhi schools for their child. Most schools have allocated maximum points to the neighbourhood criteria among the various categories but parents from the northern, western and eastern part of the city do not mind foregoing them.

Even though principals have been advising parents to only go for schools in and around their neighbourhood, parents said that lack of good schools forced them to look for schools in central and south Delhi. For Jayanti Naik (name changed), from Ashok Vihar in north Delhi only south and central Delhi schools meet her standards for her daughter.

“We cannot compromise on the quality of education and these schools are the best in the city," said Naik. However, others such as Suniti Misra who stays in Mayur Vihar said, “The well-being of the child is our priority.”
