Amid protests in Kerala demanding Rajya Sabha deputy chairperson PJ Kurien's resignation over the Suryanelli rape case, the Congress on Friday said he was given a clean chit by the courts after proper judicial examination of all the charges.

"There was a judicial process that examined... He was given a clean chit and at this point of time there is still a legal process, we cannot jump the process... Let the courts decide," party spokesperson Renuka Chowdhary said.

Asked whether Kurien should quit on moral grounds in the wake of change of statements by some witnesses, she said: "We do not have the luxury to indulge in this... We still have to go to judicial system".

As youth and women outfits of the Left and the BJP stepped up their protests in Kerala demanding his resignation and re-investigation into his alleged involvement in the case, the state Congress denounced the campaign against him.

Asserting that the party was solidly behind Kurien, Kerala unit chief Ramesh Chennithala said: “The Left, to divert public attention from its party matters, has taken the Suryanelli case to the centre-stage of a political platform. If they do not desist from politicising this issue, the Congress will have to pay them back in the same coin".

A senior Congress functionary said the CPM had been in power in Kerala for 10 out of the past 17 years during which two police inquiries were conducted and it was then chief minister EK Nayanar who ordered the closure of the case after personally reviewing it.

On its part, the BJP said the law must take its own course.
