Senior Trinamool Congress leader Mukul Roy will be the new Minister of State of Railways following the resignation of his party chief Mamata Banerjee as Railway Minister on Thursday.

Roy, Minister of State for Shipping, will hold additional charge of Railways, PMO sources said.

They said that the Railway portfolio will be retained at the Cabinet level by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who has accepted her resignation with immediate effect.

There are already two Ministers of State -- Bharatsinh Solanki and K H Muniappa -- in the ministry.

Banerjee, who will be sworn in as Chief Minister of West Bengal on Friday, sent in her resignation to the Prime Minister.
