The tussle between army chief General VK Singh and retired Lt General Tejinder Singh took a new twist on Saturday.

The judge in the Patiala House court here hearing a defamation case filed by the Tejinder on March 27 against the army chief withdrew from the case accusing Tejinder’s lawyer of “pressurising” the court for a favourable order.

Metropolitan Magistrate Sudesh Kumar said the “tone and tenor” of Tejinder’s lawyer Anil Aggarwal “reflected an attempt to overreach, browbeat and pressurise the court into falling into his lines”.

Media and lawyers in the jam-packed Patiala House court awaiting the verdict in the high-profile tussle were stunned as the magistrate suddenly recused from the case after four hearings and referred the case to Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate for a decision on May 7.

“I do not want to proceed further with the trial in the present complaint,” said the magistrate The court said Aggarwal exhibited lack of faith in the court “especially in the manner in which he had tried to dictate as to what is required to be mentioned in proceedings ordersheet”.

In the suit filed on March 27, Tejinder had demanded summoning army chief and four others — vice-chief of army staff SK Singh, Lt Gen BS Thakur (DG MI), Major General SL Narshiman (Additional Director General of Public Information) and Lt Col Hitten Sawhney, accusing them of misusing their "official position, power and authority" to level false charges against him in a press release dated March 5.
