Three arrested for duping more than 700 people of Rs. 90 lakh

Three persons - two insurance agents and a call centre owner - have been arrested for allegedly duping more than 700 people and forcing a private insurance company to incur losses of over Rs. 90 lakh in the process, the police said on Tuesday. Among those conned is an 81-year-old widow of a Mahavir Chakra winner.

The trio, identified as Uttam Nagar resident Ankur Goel (23), Rohini resident Praveen Yadav (26) and Dwarka’s Pradeep Yadav (28), the police claimed, made calls impersonating representatives of various insurance companies or the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority (IRDA). The men after making the calls induced their victims to purchase non-existent insurance policies.

“They were held following investigations into a complaint filed by the ICICI Prudential Life Insurance Company wherein it was alleged that certain people had unofficially accessed details of their customers and cheated them. The company received over 700 complaints regarding the seeming fraud from its clients after which they alerted the police,” said Sandeep Goel, joint commissioner of police (economic offences wing).

During investigations, police said they found that the fraudulent calls were being made to policy holders of ICICI Prudential Life Insurance Company on behalf of the IRDA or other companies promising false bonuses and scholarships.

The trio, police ascertained, would tell their victim that the IRDA had issued a bonus on his existing policy and to avail the benefit the customer would have to buy a new policy from another insurance company.

“People would be induced to pay for a new policy, including additional charges, with no accrued benefits,” Goel said.

“The cheque promising the bonus money never came. Due to this, the insurance company lost reputation in the market as well as business as customers started surrendering existing policies,” the police officer said.

“We would like to advise the public to verify the credentials of people approaching them as agents of insurance company.”
