Jamphel Yeshi, 27, the Tibetan man who set himself on fire on Monday during a protest against Chinese President Hu Jintao's India visit, succumbed to his injuries on Wednesday morning.

Yeshi, who had sustained 98% burns following his immolation bid, died at 7.30am at New Delhi's Ram Manohar Lohia (RML) Hospital, where he was admitted in the burns intensive care unit.

"He was very critical and suffered a cardiac arrest early in the morning. Despite our best efforts, he could not survive and was declared dead around 7.30am," said a senior doctor treating him.

Yeshi had set himself ablaze near Jantar Mantar on Monday afternoon and was rushed to the hospital.

He is the 31st Tibetan who died after committing self-immolation in Tibet and in India.

Yeshi had been living in the old camp of Majnu Ka Tila in Delhi for the last two years and was the youngest of five siblings. Born in Kham Tawu region in Tibet, he escaped to India in 2006 and studied at the Tibetan Transit School in Dharamshala for nearly three-and-a-half years.
