According to police, the incident took place around 12.30 pm when property dealer Mohammed Shahbuddin had stepped out of home for work leaving his wife and two children alone. The family lived at the second floor of a four-storey building located at Timarpur's B block.

Shahbuddin's wife Mumtaz was busy with her six-month-old son when someone knocked on the door.

Her other son, who is three years old, casually opened the door after which four masked men entered with knives and pistols, said a police officer.

"They held Mumtaz hostage at knife point and robbed R35 lakh in cash her husband had kept at home. The accused fled after tying the hands and legs of the victim," said the officer.

The three-year-old son managed to untie his mother's rope after which she made a call to the police control room.

A case has been registered and efforts are being made to identify the robbers. "We suspect the role of an insider because the robbers knew about the huge amount of cash in the house," added the officer.
