During the 12-day Commonwealth Games, 163.2 tonne of waste — equal to the weight of two Boeing 747 aircraft — will be generated daily at the venue. The Games Organising Committee (OC) said it has elaborate plans to deal with this monstrous amount of waste.
The OC, on Tuesday, said that it
has engaged three cleaning vendors to ensure the primary collection of waste across venues.
The three vendors — ISS, Sarvatra and A2Z Maintenance & Engineering Services — have been entrusted with the responsibility at the total cost of
R21 crore through a global open tender. The contract is for the period from August 1 to October 30, 2010.

ISS has being given the responsibility of cleaning the Main Press Centre and International Broadcasting Centre at ITPO, Pragati Maidan, while Sarvatra will take care of the Dr Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Aquatics Complex and the Talkatora Indoor Stadium. All other venues will be cleaned by A2Z Maintenance & Engineering Services.
Waste management at the Games Village is being taken care of by a separate vendor and kitchen waste will be managed by the caterer.
The service providers will provide garbage bins and will take care of primary collection from the venues and then move them to a separate waste compound at each venue.
The municipal agencies, New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) and the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) are responsible for secondary collection from the waste compounds for disposal.
A total of 11 waste compounds have been identified at all venues with the association of NDMC, MCD and Central Reserve Police Force. The municipal agencies will provide 1,100 waste bins.
The waste will be divided into three categories — biodegradable, recyclable and sanitary waste. These will be collected in separate colour coded bins. The committee said that environment-friendly and World Health Organization approved chemicals are being used to safely dispose the garbage.
The Organising Committee has put in a team of 51 people to ensure planning and coordination with the relevant civic agencies. Five of these people will be deployed at the OC headquarters and the rest at different venues.
